St. Patrick’s Day is the national Holiday of the Irish People and is celebrated worldwide by the Irish and even non-Irish People.  Accordingly, it is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a Public Holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Montserrat. In some places like Canada, USA, Great Britain, New Zealand and Australia, it is not an official holiday but is widely celebrated.

Who is St. Patrick? St. Patrick is one of the patron saints of Ireland. Born to British aristocrats, He is believed to have brought Christianity to Ireland in the fourth century. As in most aristocratic families at that time, Patrick as a later son was destined for the priesthood in order to bring tax incentives to his wealthy family. When he was 16 years old, he was captured by Irish raiders and held for six years. During this time, he became much more spiritual as he was a lonely shepherd and required his faith to keep him strong. He is thought to have died on 17th March. Regardless of the much folklore about him, he gave the Irish Catholics identity. He became a figure that was larger than life and was famous for having driven away all the snakes from Ireland, which refers to the practice of snake worshipping.

St. Patrick’s Day or St. Paddy’s Day is annually celebrated every 17th of March. Here in T.O. it is a day of celebration and fun for all the family enjoying the tradition, parades and a few drinks (with a pint of Guinness usually) with friends and family. This day is the day to celebrate the Irish spirit. Color green, shamrocks, and good luck.  It brings cheer to many people whether Irish or not.

So, for all things Irish, don’t miss one of the largest St. Patrick’s Parade in the world. This 21st Annual parade is happening right at the heart of Toronto on March 16. This is a definite entertainment galore full of Irish stuff. See the marching bands, the appearance of leprechauns and get your shoes ready for the Irish tap-dancing. So go get some fresh green from the Irish and celebrate. What a great excuse to enjoy a pint of Guinness!
