Celebrating Philippine Independence Day-The Torontonian Way
By Maria Clara Smith

On June 12 1898, Filipinos broke the colonial yoke they were subjected to and proclaimed their independence from foreign rule. From that time on the entire archipelago has been observing the Philippine Independence Day.

Today, Filipinos celebrate the 109th year of attaining sovereignty, even with the not so very patriotic ones. Sadly, due to the continuous economic and political turmoil in the Philippines many of the so-called freedom fighters of the Philippines have opted to settle in foreign lands, seeking greener pastures and most of all - peace.

Here in Toronto, the Filipino-Canadians celebrated the Philippine Independence day in a very traditional way.  The office of the Philippine Consulate General located at Eglinton West hosted an open house reception on June 8, where well-wishers poured-in. Various Filipino organizations within the GTA hosted an assortment of activities.

In fostering unity and in promoting the second generation of Filipinos, the Philippine Independence Day Council (PIDC) successfully organized the Miss Philippines Beauty pageant which, comprised of Little Miss, Miss Junior, Miss Teen and Miss Philippines. An added feature was the Mr. Philippines title. Aiming to showcase the talents of the young Filipinos, the program has helped these young achievers learn more about their culture, enhance their interests and develop their sense of national identity. This was followed by a Gala night held at the Toronto Congress Centre on June 9, where the beauties were formally introduced to the community as the new “Ambassadors of Goodwill”.  There was flag raising held at Vaughn and Toronto City Hall and also “Picnic at the Park” at the Earlbales Park in North York, accommodating  the 7,100 island representatives of the noble Philippines comprising of Luzon, Vizayas and Mindanao. It was very much an open form of entertainment  attended by various Filipino organizations in the GTA.

The festive mood was complete with a parade, singing, dancing and a sumptuous array of Filipino delicacies. People within the vicinity could definitely smell what’s grilling. If you have been away from the Philippines for many years now, you would surely feel homesick even if you are not nationalistic. The atmosphere at the park will give you goose bumps especially when hearing the solemn rendition of the Philippine National Anthem (Lupang Hinirang). One will experience an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia as you witness how the Filipinos celebrate vibrant feasts in their home town. These were all in celebration of their independence.

Indeed, this is a foreign land but Filipinos have a strong inclination to culture and tradition and are dedicated to leave a trace for the younger generation, so that they will appreciate their roots and continue to celebrate their first taste of freedom anywhere in the world. Here, it’s celebrated in full colour and cheer – truly the Torontonian way!

Congratulations to all Filipino-Canadians! Mabuhay!
