Why is the government honouring Canada's multicultural heritage with a special day?
The new Canadian Multiculturalism Day is an occasion to recognize and celebrate the economic, social and cultural benefits that Canada has realized as a result of its diversity and an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect.
What date will be designated Canadian Multiculturalism Day?
"Canadian Multiculturalism Day" will be celebrated on June 27 every year within the Celebrate Canada! Program.
What is the Celebrate Canada! Program?
The Celebrate Canada! Program encourages communities to participate in various events for an 11-day period from June 21, National Aboriginal Day, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24, Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27, and culminating with our country's anniversary on July 1.
Will "Canadian Multiculturalism Day" be a statutory holiday?
"Canadian Multiculturalism Day" will be a day of recognition, like National Aboriginal Day, and NOT a statutory Holiday like Canada Day.
Will communities have access to seed funding for activities related to June 27?
Seed money could be allocated to those communities wishing to celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Day within the Celebrate Canada! Program's terms and conditions.
Who will be eligible for funding?
Non-governmental organizations, ad-hoc committees, community associations and charitable organizations. Public and private corporations (except Crown Corporations) are eligible where the projects are non-commercial in nature. Municipal governments, public and private schools, school boards and other educational institutions such as colleges and universities.
Where can we obtain an application form?
Applications can be obtained from the provincial and territorial Celebrate Canada Committee in your province or territory.
Where can I apply for funding?
Applications must be submitted to the provincial/territorial Celebrate Canada Committee in your province or territory by February 28 of each year.
What is the provincial/territorial Celebrate Canada Committee?
The Celebrate Canada committees are made up of volunteer members who donate their time and skills in assisting community groups, businesses and municipal and provincial governments to coordinate local celebrations. They can be reached through your Canadian Heritage regional office.
